It's been somewhat confusing trying to figure out if Tool is recording a new album, but a recent Instagram post has cleared things up. According to Maynard James Keenan, the record is "progressing nicely" even though it's ultimately been a slow process. The new effort will follow up the band's 2006 release 10,000 Days.
"Nothing is recorded yet, but the guys are confident that the pieces are coming together swimmingly and will be ready for me to begin writing melodies and content 'soon'. I'm as anxious to get this album completed as everyone else," Keenan wrote (via Consequence of Sound). "But as history will show, you can't rush these gents. Patience is Gold in this Sound Mine. In the meantime, as always, other things are simultaneously occurring. Life is too short not to create something with every breath we draw."
The encouraging message was accompanied by a photo of the band in the studio. Check it out below.
10,000 Days hit number one on the Billboard 200 chart behind singles like "Vicarious" and "Jambi." It received a slew of nominations and positive reviews. Rolling Stone compared some of it to the band's 1993 debut Undertow while Pitchfork gave the LP a rating of 5.9 out of 10.
"But rather than delving further into experimentation or exploring their strengths, Tool have made an ... A Perfect Circle record. Like singer Maynard James Keenan's side project, 10,000 Days is considerably less punishing and much more ethereal," the publication wrote.
No release date has been set for the untitled album.
