London Olympics Live Blog, Day 12
The medal-winning wildness got off to early start at the Summer Olympics on Wednesday, with four canoe sprint finals kicking off the day at Eton. There's plenty more action to come, however, so keep checking this page for news and results all day long.

6:04p.m.: Cuba's Lazaro Borges's pole broke in qualifications for men's pole vaulting today.

5:55p.m.: The floor couldn't support the weight of all the reporters waiting to talk to women's volleyball gold medalist Misty May Treanor and Kerri Walsh Jennings. The Wall Street Journal's David Enrich tweets this photo of the collapsed floor.
He says the volleyball team fell in but weren't hurt.
4:50p.m.: RESULTS: Misty May-Treanor and Kerri Walsh Jennings have won a gold medal in women's beach volleyball, their third Olympic gold. They beat American team April Ross and Jen Kessy, who get silver. The sets scored 21 to 16, 21 to 16.
4:23p.m.: GOSSIP: The teenagers of the women's gymnastics team are going clubbing! Maybe. If so, they definitely don't want mom and dad to know. Aly Raisman appeared to accidentally tweet a direct message Wednesday afternoon, which would have been Wednesday night in the Olympic village. "Okay I have no idea were going with the guy gymnasts to some club I'll find out for you were so nervous. Omg," as Max Read noticed. She quickly deleted it. Later, Raisman posted this message, "So excited to go to sleep early tonight :) long but fun day!!!" We say American hero Olympic champions deserve a night out dancing.
12:56 p.m.: RESULT: The defending Olympic champion U.S. men's volleyball team lost its quarterfinal to Italy today, knocking them out of the tournament. Italy will face Brazil in the semis.
12:49 p.m.: RESULT: Just as that table tennis match was ending, the Women's Field Hockey semifinal between the Netherlands and New Zealand went to overtime and then penalty shootout. The Dutch team made 3 shots to the Kiwi's 1, and advanced to the Gold Medal match. Exciting finish.
12:40 p.m.: RESULT: As expected China wins the Men's Team Table Tennis final, making them a perfect 4 for 4 on Table Tennis Gold medals in this Olympics. In fact, they've now won 24 of the 28 gold medals given out in the entire history of the Olympics (and tons of Silver too) making one wonder if there is any point to challenging them anymore. South Korea wins Silver and Germany won Bronze match, as we noted earlier.
11:51 a.m.: The Gold Medal matches in today's Wrestling competition are set. Hitomi Obara of Japan will face Mariya Stadnyk of Azerbaijan in Women's 48kg at 2:03 p.m. and Kaori Icho (also of Japan) will face Jing Ruixue of China in the 63kg match at 2:48.
11:29 a.m.: Slate takes a look at the "debate" over taxing Olympians for winning medals. (They're actually taxed on the prize money given to them by the IOC for winning medals.) Should the tax code and the fight over loopholes be sacrificed in the name of sports patriotism?
11:15 a.m.: RESULT: Steve Guerdat of Switzerland wins the Individual show Jumping event. Gerco Schroder of Netherlands defeated Cian O'Connor of Ireland in a jump-off for the Silver medal. The equestrian program ends tomorrow with the Individual Dressage final.
11:03 a.m.: Alex Schwazer, who was the defending Olympic champion in the 50km race walk says he's glad that he was caught doping and expelled from the Games this week, because he was tried of hiding his blood doping problem from everyone in his life, including his girlfriend who is also a top figure skating champion. Schwazer broke down crying during a press conference today, saying, "What is most important for me is to liberate myself of this weight I have inside. I dream of another life."
10:27 a.m.: Seventeen-year-old American boxer Claressa Shields beat Marina Volnova of Kazakhstan to earn a trip to the Women's 75kg Gold Medal match. Volnova will get one of the two Bronze medals.
9:32 a.m.: An Olympic moment you might have missed from yesterday (though maybe its for the best) was German weightlifter Matthias Steiner dropping a 420-lb weight onto the back of his neck. He was okay, thankfully, and knowing that is the only way you can watch this clip with destroying your soul. (And maybe NBC might want to call it something other than a "Highlight." It just goes to show how you difficult this sport really is.
9:09 a.m.: With three event in the books (and the morning session concluded at Olympic Stadium, Americans hold the top two spots in the Decathlon. Ashton Eaton (who won the 100m and the Long Jump) is first, and teammate Trey Hardee is second. Oleksiy Kasyanov of Ukraine is in third. There will be two more events this afternoon, and the conclusion is tomorrow.
9:06 a.m.: RESULT: Germany beat Hong Kong (which is not the same team as China) in the Bronze Medal match of Men's Team Table Tennis.
8:30 a.m.: RESULT: The Australian pair of Nathan Outteridge and Iain Jensen finished in the middle of the pack in the final Men's 49er race, but that was merely a formality as they had already secured Gold in the 16-race event. New Zealanders Peter Burling and Blair Tuke got the Silver and Allan Norregaard and Peter Lang of Denmark take the Brozne.
7:35 a.m.: Another nice moment at Olympic Stadium as Sarah Attar, Saudi Arabia's second-ever female athlete runs her heat in the 800m. Running in full pants, sleeves and a hijab, she finished about 40 seconds behind the winner, but received huge applause and encouragement from the crowd.
6:16 a.m.: MEDAL COUNT UPDATE: China's lead over the United States continues to hold with 34 Gold Medals (73 total) to the Americans' 30 (with 70 total.) Great Britain had a huge day yesterday, breaking their 2008 Beijing totals in both Golds (22) and Overall medals (48.) Most of their best events are behind them, but they hold 10 medal lead over South Korea and hope to hold on to third place by the end of the Games.
6:12 a.m.: MEDALS TO BE AWARDED TODAY: In addition to the four Canoe medals already given out today (see below); there are 12 other Gold Medal events today. Here they are in order, with all times approximate and subject to change:
Men's 49er Sailing (8:00 a.m.); Individual Equestrian Jumping (9:55 a.m.); Men's Team Table Tennis (10:30 a.m.); Women's 48kg Freestyle Wrestling (2:03 p.m.); Women's 63kg Freestyle Wrestling (2:48 p.m.); Women's Long Jump (3:05 p.m.); Women's 400m Hurdles (3:45 p.m.); Women's 200m Run (4:00 p.m.); Women's Beach Volleyball (4:00 p.m.); Men's 110m Hurdles (4:15 p.m.); Women's -49kg Taekwondo (5:15 p.m.); and Men's -58kg Taekwondo (5:30 p.m.).
6:00 a.m.: WEDNESDAY'S SCHEDULED EVENTS:
Athletics: Today's Events: MORNING SESSION: The first Decathlon events (100m, Long Jump, and Shot Put); Qualifiers in Men's Pole Vault and Women's Hammer Throw; and Round 1 of the Men's 5,000m and Women's 800m. AFTERNOON (2:00 p.m. onward): Decathlon High Jump and 400m; Qualifiers in Men's Javelin; Semifnals of the Women's 1,500m and Men's 200m; FINALS of the Women's Long Jump, 400m Hurdles, and 200m spring; and the Semifinals (2:15 p.m.) and FINALS of the men's 110m Hurdles end the day at 4:15 p.m.
Basketball: Men's Quarterfinals. Games at 9:00 a.m.; 11:15 a.m.; 3:00 p.m.; and USA plays Australia at 5:15 p.m.
Beach Volleyball: Women's Bronze (2:00 p.m.) and Gold Medal matches. Two American teams (April Ross/Jennifer Kessy vs. Misty May-Treanor/Kerri Walsh Jennings) will compete in the FINAL at 4:00 p.m.
Boxing: Semifinals of the Women's Fly, Light, and Middle Weights are in the morning session beginning at 8:30 a.m. The afternoon has Quarterfinals for Men's Light Fly, Light Welter, and Light Heavy weights. (Begins at 3:30 p.m.)
Canoe Sprint: FINALS of the 1,000m Men's Kayak Single and Double; the Men's Canoe Single 1,000m; and Women's Kayak Four (500m) have already taken place. See below for results.
Cycling (BMX): The preliminary seeding rounds in Men's and Women's BMX begin at 10:00 a.m.
Diving: Preliminaries of the Women's 10m Platform begin at 2:00 p.m.
Equestrian: FINAL rounds of Individual Jumping begin at 7:00 a.m. and 9:55 a.m.
Handball: Men's Quarterfinals. Matches at 6:00 a.m.; 9:30 a.m.; 1:00 p.m.; and 4:30 p.m.
Field Hockey: Women's Semifinals. Netherlands-New Zealand is at 10:30 a.m. and Argentina-Great Britain is at 3:00 p.m.
Sailing: The MEDAL RACE in the Men's 49er is at 8:00 a.m. Also: Races 9 and 10 in the Women's 470 (7:00 a.m.) and the Quarterfinals of the Women's Elliott 6 begin at 9:00 a.m.
Table tennis: Bronze (6:00 a.m.) and GOLD MEDAL matches (10:30 a.m.) in the Men's Team competition. It's the last event of the Olympics for this sport.
Taekwondo: It's the first day of the Olympics for this sport and it begins with the Women's 49kg and Men's 58kg divisions. Preliminaries are underway and FINALS begin at 5:15 p.m.
Volleyball: Men's Quarterfinals. Matches at 9:00 a.m.; 11:00 a.m.; 2:30 p.m.; and 4:30 p.m. The U.S. plays Italy in the second match.
Water Polo: Men's Quarterfinals. Matches at 9:30 a.m.; 10:50 a.m.; 1:40 p.m.; and 3:00 p.m. The United States takes on Croatia at 3:00 p.m.
Wrestling: Women's Freestyle tournaments in the 48kg and 63kg division. Qualifiers begin at 8:00 a.m; FINALS begin at 2:00 p.m.
5:50 a.m.: RESULT: Hungary wins the last race of the day; the 500m Women's Kayak Fours. Germany gets the Silver and Belarus takes the Bronze.
5:29 a.m.: RESULT: After 1,000 meters of racing in the Men's Kayak Double, Roland Kokeny and Rudolf Dombi of Hungary edge Emanuel Silva and Fernando Pimenta of Portugal by just 0.053 seconds. Check out the amazing photo finish:
Germany's Andreas Ihle and Martin Hollstein get Bronze.
5:12 a.m.: An abandoned Canoe after a racer was injured.
5:04 a.m.: RESULT: Sebastian Brendel of Germany is first across the line the 1,000m Single Canoe Sprint. David Cal Figueroa of Spain edges Mark Oldershaw of Germany for the Silver.
4:47 a.m.: RESULT: We're getting right into today! The Rowing Finals have started early today with Norway's Eirik Veras Larsen winning the first Gold of the day in Single Sprint Kayak. He rallied late to beat Adam van Koeverden of Canada (Silver) and Max Hoff of Germany came in third. Canoe Singles are up next.
