Shawn Warren soars up PPC leaderboard thanks to two eagles in Round 3

SEASIDE, Calif. -- Sometimes it's just your day.

Tuesday was Shawn Warren's day.

The 33-year-old Warren, playing out of Falmouth Country Club in Maine, fired a 4-under 68 on a frigid and windy day at Bayonet in the third round of the PGA Professional Championship to get to 3 under for the tournament and near the top of the leaderboard.

Warren's day began with an eagle at the first hole. He followed it with an eagle at the eighth hole. 

"On the first hole, I missed my drive a little bit, but I had a 3-wood in and I just tried to trust it with the cold weather and things like that," he said. "I knew it would probably fly a little short. I hit 3-wood from 260 and was able to get it pin-high to 20 feet and made the putt. 

"On 8, it was 600 yards into the wind," he continued. "I hit driver well. The pin was up front, so I tried to get it up there somewhat close to the front edge. I ended up trickling just off the fringe and into the collection area. I hit putter hoping to get up there close and it ended up falling. It was a bonus to get that one to go. After that I was holding on because it was windy."

Warren had a couple of bogeys on the back, but canceled them out with three birdies, including one on the par-5 10th and lastly on the par-5 18th. He played the par 5s in 6-under par.

"I took advantage of the par 5s today," Warren said. "With my length, I was utilizing that and holding on the rest of the way, because it was playing cold and windy. I can't imagine there are going to be a lot of low scores today."

Warren is hoping to punch a ticket to his first PGA Championship on Wednesday and he's in terrific chape. Warren tied for 20th in the 2015 PPC, but was eliminated from a playoff for the final spot in that year's PGA Championship. 

He was delighted with his work in Round 3. 
 
"I saw a few low scores early, but if you're out in the morning before that wind starts -- especially with the greens a little softer -- you can do something," Warren said. "But if you told me I could shoot 4 under in this wind this afternoon, I would have definitely signed for it and not played today. This is feeling like middle of the season golf in Maine. In Maine it's unpredictable. It's probably warmer in Maine right now. This weather is pretty typical there."
