Woman seriously injured in head-on crash in Washington Township

WASHINGTON TOWNSHIP —  A woman was seriously injured Tuesday afternoon when her car crashed head-on into another vehicle after crossing over into the opposing lane of traffic on Schooleys Mountain Road, police said.

Schooleys Mountain Road was shut down following a two-vehicle crash Tuesday afternoon, police said.

Officers responded to a two-vehicle crash on Schooleys Mountain Road at about 4:29 p.m. after receiving a call reporting visible flames at the crash scene, police said in a news release.

A 2014 Chevrolet driven by Omar Garcia, 34, Allentown, Pa. was traveling north on Schooleys Mountain Road — also known as Route 517 — when it collided with a southbound 1993 Toyota operated by Mary Lou Gunther, 67, Hillsborough after her vehicle had crossed over the double-yellow center lines and into the northbound lane, Lt. Mark Niemynski said.

Niemynski told NJ.com there's a bend in the road on that stretch of Schooleys Mountain Road, but that police were still unsure what caused Gunther to cross over into the northbound lane.
