Todd Carney could be on a plane to England within the next 48 hours as Hull KR prepare to welcome their new signing.

As exclusively revealed by the Mail earlier this month, the half-back penned a short-term contract with the Robins until the end of the season.

The former Catalans Dragons and Salford Red Devils playmaker had his visa application approved earlier this week and is set to jet into the UK in the coming days.

There remains a sticking point in the transfer to Rovers, with a $15,000 fee still deemed payable to Carney’s former side Northern Pride to obtain his playing release. KR remain confident, as they have done throughout the move, that this will be resolved shortly.

Whilst Carney obviously won’t feature in Friday’s home clash against Warrington Wolves, coach Tim Sheens hopes to have the 31-year-old available for the regular season finale in the derby at Hull FC next Friday evening.

Meanwhile, Sheens also confirmed that Rovers expect to be without winger Justin Carney for around four weeks with an ankle injury, sustained on his comeback from a broken hand in last Saturday’s 26-24 victory at Widnes Vikings.

The Robins boss also spoke about the successful surgery on winger Ryan Shaw following a knee problem.

Sheens on Todd Carney’s arrival

“Todd should be on his way in the next, I hope, 48 hours. The situation with his release fee is in the hands of Mike Smith (KR CEO), Todd’s agent and Todd himself.

“I understand they are close to sorting that out too. They’re comfortable it will get done.

“His visa is all sorted and he should be on a plane in the next few days.

“Justin will probably be a month. Hopefully no longer than that.

“Unfortunately it was his first game back but it was a bad ankle twist. Therefore he’s in a protective boot at the moment. Hopefully he’s no longer than a month at the moment.

Sheens on Ryan Shaw’s surgery

“Ryan’s been at training today, he’s well. Surgery went well, it was a reasonable amount of damage on the knee and it was the same one he did his ACL with two years ago.

“But there was no further damage to that so he was happy. There was some cartilage damage and small lateral ligament damage which was repaired. He should be fit for the start of pre-season training next year.”
