Iowa high school football: Stat leaders after Week 4

A couple of quick takeaways before we get to the numbers.

First off, Sioux City North has scored some points this season, and will likely continue to score some points. You’ll remember them as the team that scored 81 points in Week 2 and lost. The Stars may be 1-3, but they’re averaging 49.3 points per game.

Part of that has been the passing game. Senior quarterback Matt Hagan, the state’s newly-minted passing leader after Week 4, has thrown for 1,416 yards and 22 touchdowns in four games. A lot of that came in that 99-81 loss to Council Bluffs Thomas Jefferson, of course, but if you take those numbers out, Hagan’s thrown for 1,113 yards and 13 touchdowns in the other three games.

Hagan’s done a fine job of spreading the ball around, too. Four different receivers have caught at least 10 passes, and three have caught at least six touchdowns. Devonta Cobbs is the favorite target, at 29 catches for 606 yards — good for third on our receiving yards list below.

The other takeaway is that you’ll notice a new name atop the tackles leaderboard, and that’s Ridge View’s Jake Kliegl. Kliegl jumped to the top after a 23-tackles performance in a loss to Lawton-Bronson last week. Of those 23 tackles, Kliegl racked up 21 solo stops.

So yeah. Sioux City North has an offense, and Ridge View’s Kliegl can tackle. Good stuff heading into Week 5.
