DALY CITY — A garbage truck driver died after getting crushed between a parked car and and his truck while on his pick-up route early Wednesday, police said.

The fatality happened in the 600 block of Skyline Drive around 6:15 a.m., Sgt. Ron Harrison said.

Police still were investigating what happened, but it appears the driver, who likely was standing while operating the garbage truck, exited the vehicle, Harrison said. The truck then appears to have rolled into him and the vehicle, Harrison said.

Rescue crews found the man trapped between the truck and the vehicle. The vehicle was unoccupied and parked along the curb near the cans, Harrison said.

Residents in the neighborhood heard the commotion and called 911, Harrison said.

Authorities pronounced him dead at the scene.

The driver was operating a Republic Services truck that’s contracted out through the city of Daly City, Harrison said.

“It is with great sadness for the entire Republic Services family that we learned today that one of our employees will not be making it home safely to his family this evening,” the company said in a statement. “We are mourning the loss of our friend and coworker, and our thoughts and prayers are with his family and loved ones.”

The San Mateo County Coroner’s Office said Wednesday afternoon that they were unable to release the identity of the driver
