Chamber Connections: Need a job? Upcoming fairs offer opportunities

What are you passionate about?

In working with area employers, I ask "What is one of the more common questions you ask at a job interview?" The No. 1 answer across all industries is “What are you passionate about?”

I am excited this question is asked, as I have found that local employers ask this question for a number of reasons, such as it helps employers to see that you are a well-rounded person or that there is life outside of the office.

By learning more about who you are as an individual, the employer can get a sense of whether you will fit in well with the company culture. Although your passion does not have to be related to the work you will be doing at the company, your answer will show the hiring manager whether you are a committed person who follows through with what you believe in. This is an important quality for almost any job.

The Otsego County Chamber of Commerce, since our Workforce Summit last fall, has been actively working with the state Department of Labor and CDO Workforce to help spread the word that there are hundreds of job openings locally paying livable wages in many sectors, and we want to help fill them with local talent.

If you are looking for a first-time job, a career change, a part-time job or trying to help someone else find a job, everyone is encouraged to attend these upcoming job fairs. In being a host for several job fairs over the years I have always witnessed meaningful connections made between employers and job-seekers and it is a win-win for everyone!

Here are some tips for getting the most out of a Job Fair as it’s worth your effort. You'll have the opportunity to meet with employers you might not be able to access any other way, and job fairs offer great networking.

Dress for success: Attend the job fair dressed for business success in your best professional interview attire.

Bring supplies and network with everyone: Bring extra copies of your resume, a few pens, and a notepad. You never know who might be able to help with your job search as you are networking with different employers.

Obviously you want to network with the company representatives and recruiters, but making conversation with other job-seekers is a nice way to find hidden opportunity and advice. You never know who you might meet or what you might learn
