Tucson Schools Consider New Changes To High School Boundaries

The proposal, presented to the board Tuesday night, would redraw the boundaries for Catalina, Palo Verde, Rincon, and Tucson High Schools.

TUCSON, AZ – The Tucson Unified School District is considering a plan that would shift thousands of students to different high schools.The plan was presented to the district's governing board on Tuesday.

The changes are considering in the district's High School Revitalization Initiative.

The plan would redraw the boundaries for Catalina, Palo Verde, Rincon, and Tucson High Schools.

Some of Rincon's students could be shifted to Palo Verde while some of Tucson's students would go to Catalina.

The board will spend at least the next five months considering the proposal including holding hearings as well as public and private hearings. Based on those meetings, the plans could shift.

The district is looking to equally distribute students among the schools. While Tucson is currently at 107 percent of capacity and Rincon at 110 percent, Catalina is at 50 percent and Palo Verde is only at 55 percent.

The board isn't expected to vote before June 12.
