Rockford, Grand Rapids Christian volleyball advance to state semis

The Grand Rapids Christian and Rockford volleyball teams have advanced to this week's state semifinals after winning quarterfinal matches Tuesday night.

Rockford defeated Richland Gull Lake 3-0 in its match at Caledonia, enabling the Rams to advance to Friday's  6:30 p.m. Division 1 semifinal against Northville at Kellogg Arena in Battle Creek. The winner will advance to Saturday's 1 p.m. state final against the winner of Friday's 4:30 p.m. Lake Orion vs. Farmington Hills Mercy match.

Rockford, ranked seventh in the state, improved to 46-11-1 overall. It is the Rams' second trip to the Final Four in the past three years. Rockford lost in the 2016 finals to Novi. Rockford won the 2011 state championship.

No. 1 ranked Christian earned a trip to Battle Creek, too. The Eagles blanked Hamilton 3-0 in Division 2 action at Otsego and will take on Lake Odessa Lakewood Thursday at 4:30 p.m. The winner will play the winner of Thursday's Pontiac Notre Dame Prep vs. Corunna match on Saturday at 4 p.m.

Addie VanderWeide led the Eagles with 15 kills, while Liz Rupp had two service aces and Laruen Peal recorded 11 digs. Jordyn Gates finished with 35 assists and Ayva Kooistra had 3 blocks.

NorthPointe Christian's season came to an end Tuesday. The Mustangs lost 3-0 to Bronson at Unity Christian.
