WHEN people see him singing, they take pity on him as he looks just like any street kid.

And that’s when gospel singer Simphiwe Masayimani knows he has succeeded in his aim. The 30-year-old wants people to look
beyond clothes and appearances and see true potential.

Simphiwe, from Mthatha – who goes by the stage name of Budget – has been singing since 1997 and has two albums under his belt.

He told Daily Sun: “People stop and stare at your clothes and draw a conclusion about you. By wearing the clothes of a street kid I’m showing people that those society shun have God-given talents.

“You dress to kill, but it doesn’t count.

“What matters most is your heart which God can see behind the clothes.”

He said he was involved in programmes to feed street kids and homeless people.

Simphiwe was spotted singing in the Uitenhage CBD on Saturday.

He started singing in local groups in Mthatha a few years ago and in 2012 released his first album, titled Ama Return Ezulu.

His second album is called Budget Yezulu. He plans to release a 10-track album, Inkedama, later this month.
