TV picks for Sunday, Sept. 24

“Sunday Night Football” — Raiders at Redskins (5:25 p.m. PT, NBC): Kirk Cousins and the Washington Redskins (1-1) host Derek Carr and the Oakland Raiders (2-0) at FedEx Field in Landover, Md., in what will be just the second primetime game between the two storied franchises since the 1970 AFL-NFL merger. Coverage begins with “Football Night in America” at 5 p.m. PT.

“60 Minutes” (7 p.m., CBS): The iconic news magazine launches its 50th season and Oprah is in the house. Serving as a special contributor, Winfrey’s first segment is devoted to the political divide that’s currently stirring America. Also included: A story on Hurricane Harvey’s destruction in Houston, and Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) addresses his health and politics in Washington.

“Star Trek: Discovery” (8:30 p.m., CBS):  Set 10 years before Captain Kirk and Mr. Spock launched their mission to boldly go where no man had gone before, this new space saga is an ambitious endeavor to reboot the beloved sci-fi franchise on TV after a 12-year absence. With a cast led by Sonequa Martin-Green as First Officer Michael Burnham, the story features a new ship, new characters and new missions. After the first episode premieres on broadcast television, the entire series will move exclusively to the CBS All Access digital subscription platform.

“Who Shot Biggie & Tupac?” (8 p.m., Fox): This investigative crime special, led by Ice-T and journalist Soledad O’Brien. examines two of the greatest murder mysteries in pop culture history. The special digs deep into the entangled murders of hip-hop’s most legendary adversaries – rappers Tupac Shakur and Biggie Smalls — former friends who were gunned down within months of each other in the late 1990s.

“Teen Wolf” (8 p.m., MTV): Prepare to say farewell to the supernatural drama as its six-season run comes to an end. In the series finale, titled “The Wolves of War,” Gerard and his army of hunters initiate their final attack on Beacon Hills. Our eyes are glowing with anticipation.

“Outlander” (8 p.m., Starz): In prison, Jamie discovers that an old foe has become the warden – and now has the power to make his life a living hell. Over the years, Claire and Frank both put their best foot forward to share a harmonious marriage, but an uninvited guest shatters this illusion, bringing their differences to light.

“The People’s Network Showcase: Animation Edition” (8 p.m., El Rey): This special features two hours of 13 hand-picked short films and exclusive interviews with standout rising independent filmmakers from around the world. Acclaimed animated film director Jorge Gutierrez hosts.

“Legion of Brothers” (9 p.m., CNN): This documentary, feted at the Sundance Film Festival, explores the secret U.S. forces mission that initiated operations in Afghanistan just weeks after the 9/11 terrorist attacks. Fewer than 100 soldiers from the elite Green Berets of the U.S. Army were selected to carry out President Bush’s mission. The broadcast will be presented with limited commercial interruption.

“Get Shorty” (10 p.m., Epix): Miles struggles to keep production challenges at bay before a studio executive’s visit; Rick and Louis navigate their own relationships and the issues they pose to the film.
