James A Haug

James A Haug, age 95 of Edinburg, ND passed away on Saturday, October 28, 2017 at the First Care Health Center of Park River.

James A. Haug, Jr, was born April 14, 1922 in Tiber Township of Walsh County, ND the son of the late James A. and Anna (Holth) Haug. He was baptized and confirmed at the Odalen Lutheran Church in rural Edinburg. James attended rural school in Tiber Township. Following his education he worked on the family farm and worked for the neighbors. He enlisted in the United States Merchant Marines on July 7, 1944 and served in the Atlantic during World War II. Following his discharge on April 7, 1945 he returned home and farmed with his brother Norris until retiring in 1989. In the winter of 1950 James worked at Boeing in Seattle and in 1952 worked for Texaco. James was united in marriage to Doris Lykken on June 9, 1973. They made their home near Edinburg until 2007 when they moved to Edinburg.

James was a member of the Odalen Lutheran Church of rural Edinburg until it closed. He served as trustee, deacon and secretary. Upon the church's closing he joined Trinity Lutheran Church in Edinburg. He served as secretary/treasurer of the Walsh County Farmers Union for 20 years. He also served as a 4-H leader, a director for the Walsh County Crop Improvement Association and a director at the Lutheran Sunset Home of Grafton. He helped with the annual lutefisk at the Park River Bible Camp for 21 years. Doris and James enjoyed traveling through most of their lives and have now settled down in Edinburg. James enjoyed being a Grandpa and Great Grandpa and loved to tell stories about them.

James is survived by his wife, Doris of Edinburg, ND; his step-children: Terry (JoAnn) Lykken, West Fargo, ND; Sheila (Earl) Sanders, Osnabrock, ND: Cindy (Ken) Gross, Walker, MN; his grandchildren: Jeremy Lykken, Ryan Lykken and Ross Lykken, all of Fargo, ND; Jon (Dawn) Sanders, West Palm Beach, FL; Suzanne (Jason) Bott, Langdon, ND; Stephanie Sanford, Mesa, AZ; Matthew (Emma) Gross, Redmond, WA; Michael (Amanda) Gross, Lacon, IL; great grandchildren: Dylan & Alex Bott and James Gross; his siblings: Glenn Haug, Park River, ND; Irma Gemmill, Grand Forks, ND; and Anne Christine Puppe, Cavalier, ND. Several nieces and nephews also survive. He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Norris.

Funeral services will be Tuesday, October 31, 2017 at 10:30 AM at the Trinity Lutheran Church of Edinburg, ND. Visitation will be Tuesday for one hour prior to the service. Interment will be at the Odalen Lutheran Cemetery, rural Edinburg, ND. Military rites will be provided by the Edinburg, American Legion Post and the North Dakota National Guard Honor Guard.
