Down and out in my own mansion! Wealthy husband has lived as a vagrant on the lawn of his $1.3m home for six months after his wife threw him out and changed the locks

  • Sharafat Khan is forced to sleep outside his Seabrook, Texas, home
  • His wife Shahnaz, 61, changed locks in the middle of a domestic dispute
  • Means he has no access to food, washing facilities or their money
  • Concerned neighbors try and help him by giving him blankets and food
  • But his wife stops them, and has even put up signs warning people off
  • She claims they cannot divorce because they are strict Muslims and practice Sharia law
  • Khan says the split is simply about money, but he can't afford a lawyer

A 69-year-old man has been forced to live on the front lawn of his $1.3million mansion for six months after his angry doctor wife kicked him out.

Sharafat Khan is homeless but sleeping just a few feet away from the front door of his lavish Seabrook, Texas, home because the mother of his two children, Shahnaz, 61, changed the locks in the midst of an ongoing domestic dispute.

He has no access to the Muslim couple's money and has been barred from using the washing facilities, even though he owns half the suburban property.

Neighbors fear he could die in front of his own house as he is already very frail and can't walk very well.

Khan sleeps on the front porch wrapped in a sheet at night, or sometimes goes into the back yard, alongside his swimming pool, for privacy.

According to KPRC, he finds shade under trees during the day.

He says the pair have been fighting for six years, but only recently was he thrown out.

Residents in the suburban community have said that if they try and bring him blankets, his wife takes them away.

She has even put up signs warning people living in the community against feeding him.

Police have been called to the residence 30 times, but cannot legally force his wife to let him in.

Khan said the dispute is over his relationship with other family members. She wanted him to cut ties but he refused.

A source close to the couple's situation said Khan's wife claims she can't file for divorce because she and her husband practice Islam and strictly follow Sharia law.

But Khan has rubbished the allegation, and says the split is all about money.

He said: 'She doesn’t want to hand over half her fortune', while he can't file for divorce because he can't afford an attorney, and he wants his share of the estate.

Their neighbors are now frustrated as their private dispute has now been made public.

Debbie Scoggins told KPRC: 'He’s wearing the same clothing, it’s dirty. I’m just hoping we can find help for him.'

Laurel Stout, who lives across the street, added: 'He’s very frail, he can’t even walk. I’m afraid he is going to die out here in his yard.

'Allowing this to continue is not in the best interest of anyone.'

Adult Protective Services are believed to be involved in the case, but they cannot make Khan get help.

According to court documents, in 2008 Khan was charged with assault after he allegedly hit his wife.

An online database also states Khan was the director of the family company Kahn Investments LLC.
