Ducks drop Civil War opener

04/19/18 | Baseball

Corvallis, Ore. – Oregon fell behind early and couldn't rally in a 5-2 loss at No. 10 Oregon State to open the Pac-12 Conference series Thursday night at Goss Stadium.

How it happened: The Beavers (27-6, 8-5 Pac-12) took an early lead scoring a run on three hits in the bottom of the first inning, but it could have been worse for the Ducks. With the bases loaded and two outs, Kyle Kasser fielded the ball up the middle and made the long throw to first just in time to get Tyler Malone to end the inning.

Oregon State added a run in the second to make it 2-0. After back-to-back walks, Nick Madrigal singled through the right side to score Steven Kwan.

Oregon (19-16, 6-10 Pac-12) cut the lead in half in the top of the third on a Kasser RBI single scoring Ryne Nelson. The Ducks shortstop walked and advanced to second on a throwing error on a pickoff attempt by OSU starter Luke Heimlich (9-1), before coming in to score.

OSU got the run back in its half of the third when Trevor Larnach hit his 11th home run of the season over the left-field wall. Malone made it 5-1 in the bottom of the fifth with a two-run homer to right center.

The Ducks cut the lead to 5-2 in the top of the seventh. Ray Soderman delivered a two-out RBI single to score Gabe Matthews after he was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning.

Duck notes: Kasser moved into sixth all-time at Oregon in career hits with 164, passing KC Serna (2009-11) … He recorded his 48th career multi-hit game and is now just four behind J.J. Altobelli for fourth in school history … Kasser drove in his first run since March 24 against Cal … Yovan's last four hits have all been for extra bases … Matt Mercer made his 30th career start and is three behind Tommy Thorpe (2012-14) for seventh in Oregon history ... Nelson and Yovan were both named to the watch list for the John Olerud Two-Way Player of the Year Award ... Yovan was also selected to the College Baseball Foundation's National Pitcher of the Year Award watch list.

On deck: Oregon and Oregon State play game two of their series Friday at 4 p.m. The game will be televised on the Pac-12 Network – Oregon.
