Penn Bagley is playing another online stalker in Lifetime’s You. Blake Lively is still being glamorous in the news. And Leighton Meester is re-emerging on television in a new ABC comedy, Single Parents. It feels like the Gossip Girl gang is blissfully back in the spotlight. So you know we had to ask — are there any official plans for a revival or reboot?
Though there have been rumors bouncing around for years about an extension to Gossip Girl’s universe, Meester struck down the idea at the Television Critics Association‘s 2018 summer tour. When asked if anyone has talked to her about a possible reboot or revival, Meester said, “Never from anybody associated with the show.”
And we all know Gossip Girl would be nothing without Blair Waldorf.
As the years have passed, Gossip Girl‘s legacy has evolved from merely being a controversial and addicting CW show. Meester and Lively’s ever-loving portrayal of intense female friendship has especially been praised. “I feel so lucky that I was part of that, that it lives on, that it’s found new fans with a new generation,” Meester said. “I think it’s amazing that it still hold up and I think it’s also amazing that the fans that were my age or younger when it started are now my age and can kinda see and come on a little journey with me in a different direction and see what I’m up to now.”
But Gossip Girl’s fans aren’t the only ones who have grown up. Meester’s latest role sees her playing a young and over-it single mother on ABC’s Single Parents. The family comedy also stars Taran Killam and Brad Garrett.
“She’s a single mom, she’s got a lot of walls built up. I think it comes off hopefully in a funny way,” she said. “As we chip away, I think you’ll see a vulnerable side of Angie and discover her relationship with her child, the dynamics between her and the other people in the little friend group. It’ll be a lot of fun.”
As long as Angie channels some of Blair’s patented sass, we’re on board.
Single Parents premieres on ABC Wednesday, September 26 at 9:30/8:30c.
