Comcast to launch new 1 gigabit internet service in 27 municipalities

Comcast recently launched a new high-speed, 1-gigabit per second internet service in Hartford and municipalities across Connecticut, company officials announced.

The service will power residential and business customers in 27 towns and cities, including Hartford, East Hartford, Ellington, Windsor, Hamden, Danbury, Middletown, Berlin and West Hartford, among others. The Philadelphia-based telecommunications giant says it will launch the new internet service in Connecticut throughout 2018.

Comcast officials said the internet service is among the fastest available and includes access to the nation’s largest Wi-Fi network.

Under the new service, customers can download a 5-gigabyte HD movie in 40 seconds, download a 600-megabyte TV episode in four seconds and a 15-gigabyte video game in two minutes, they said.

The residential gigabit service, without a contract, is available for about $105 per month. A promotional package for about $90 per month over a year is also being offered. Comcast said the cost for business customers varies based on a variety of factors including a business’s physical address and number of locations to be served.

Michael Parker, senior vice president of Comcast’s Western New England Region, said the company has increased its internet speeds 17 times in the last 17 years.

Comcast also said it recently completed a $6-million network expansion project in downtown Hartford.
