ELLINGTON, Conn. — School officials in Ellington, Conn., say a high school freshman has been killed in a weekend river tubing accident in New York.

Superintendent Scott Nicol said in a message to the community that Jordyn Engler died on Saturday in Shandaken, NY, while riding on the tube raft with her father, Jeff Engler, who was injured.

Nicol said grief counselors would be at Ellington High School from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sunday. Nicol said, “Our prayers and thoughts go out to the Engler family and friends.”

The Ulster County sheriff’s office said the father and his 14-year-old daughter were on Esopus Creek when their tube overturned just after 11 a.m.

Jeff Engler was rescued a short time later, but Jordyn’s body was not found for several hours.
