The 24th Pottstown Rumble volleyball tournament got started Thursday with two clinics for youth volleyball players taught by one of America’s best-known names in the sport.

Three-time Olympic gold medalist Misty May-Treanor was at Memorial Park to host two sessions of her Dream In Gold clinic for players ages 12-18. About 100 young athletes participated in the morning session, with another 80 in the afternoon session.

“Just seeing the little improvement,” May-Treanor said when asked to name her favorite thing about hosting the clinics. “We don’t have them for a large amount of time, but hopefully they can leave with a little bit more knowledge and more to practice.”

According to Rumble organizer Ken Kaas, last year’s event featured about 3,400 volleyball players, competing in various divisions. The 2015 Rumble is even larger, with nearly 4,000 taking part throughout the weekend.

May-Treanor made a return visit, having also hosted a clinic at the 2013 Rumble. She said the size of the event is what sets Pottstown apart from other tournaments.

“Ken and Seth (Ken’s son) do an amazing job putting on this tournament,” she said. “For the numbers they have, and how they fit it in, it’s amazing. You can see the time they put into something really unique and really good, and it draws people from all over.”

The Rumble, a grass tournament, really gets rolling today at Memorial Park, King and Manatawny streets, with a junior doubles competition, followed by men’s and women’s doubles Saturday. The Rumble finishes Sunday with coed doubles, gender-blind quads and juniors quads.
