St. Lawrence University Head Men’s Basketball Coach Chris Downs has announced the addition of veteran coaches Sherry Dobbs and Tom Miller to his staff for the 2016-17 season. St. Lawrence coaching veteran Mark Bickelhaupt will continue on in an assistant coaching role as well.

“Last spring we knew we were returning all of the most important pieces to our team,” said Downs. “We talked to our team about every person involved with the program, getting a little better during the off season and if we did that, collectively we’d be much improved in 2016-17.  With the addition of Sherry, a 20-year college coach, and Tom, a 30-year high school coach along with having Mark back, I know our staff got better.  I’m really excited to learn some new things working alongside these guys.”

Dobbs worked as an assistant coach for the Saints in 1997-98. He was most recently the head coach at SUNY Potsdam where he led the Bears to more than 100 wins and advanced the team to the NCAA Tournament twice, including a trip to the Elite Eight in 2004-05.

Miller joins a veteran staff after nearly 30 years of experience at the high school level, most recently at Massena where he led the Raiders to the Section X Class A championship last year.

Bickelhaupt has been with the St. Lawrence coaching staff for the past 19 seasons alongside Downs. The veteran assistant coach works primarily with the post position players.

Collectively, the staff has nearly 90 years of coaching experience.
