Ryderwood Driver Injured in Cowlitz County Crash

A Ryderwood woman was injured Saturday evening after a collision south of Kelso on Interstate 5, according to the Washington State Patrol.

Troopers responded to the crash at 6:57 p.m. Saturday at milepost 35 of I-5.

Three vehicles, a 1996 Honda Civic, a 2014 Toyota Camry and a 1996 Toyota pickup, were traveling northbound on the freeway in the left lane. The Toyota Camry and truck stopped for a disabled vehicle that was blocking the left lane when the Honda hit the Camry from behind, pushing it into the truck.

The driver of the Honda Civic, identified as Joel M. Akin, 25, of Kalama, was cited for following too close, according to the State Patrol. He was not injured, but his vehicle was totaled.

The driver of the Camry, identified as Lee V. Hetterly, 75, of Everson, and a passenger, Charmaine D. Hetterly, 73, of Everson, were both injured and transported to Peacehealth St. John Medical Center in Longview.

The driver of the Toyota pickup, Lori L. Shepherd, 52, of Ryderwood, was also injured and transported to the Longview Hospital. A passenger, Thomas W. Bryant, 53, also of Ryderwood, was not injured.
