The unstoppable rise of WordPress

The unstoppable rise of WordPress

Nuria Ramoneda's portrait

Our colleague Núria is one of these people that are always smiling. She and her smile joined Volcanic last January as Lead WordPress developer, and her team hasn't stopped growing since then. In fact, WordPress projects are on a rise, and only in the last months, she has worked with Idibgi, Viu Casa, Ecocèutics, Aba English, and the Academy of Art of Barcelona.

She is also a very active member of the WordPress community. The same community which has developed almost 60.000 plugins that complement this tool. To have such a dedicated community is the result of the mission that their creators, Matt Mullenweg and Mike Little, set up when they launched it in 2003: to democratize publishing websites. That's also the reason why their software is open-source and licensed under General Public License (GPL v2), which means it’s free to use and free to modify.

WordPress is currently the most used Content Management System in the World, and it powers almost 40% of all the websites online. Some of the most popular websites made with WordPress are the official site from The White House, the blog from TedX and Tripadvisor, and the website from BBC America.

The fact that WordPress and the programming languages it is supported on are free to use doesn't mean it is made for small websites with low traffic. WordPress is certainly capable of managing large amounts of visitors, but you need to make sure the site is ready to deal with high traffic volumes to ensure it won't crash after receiving only a few thousand hits. Some of our clients which rely on WordPress, as Radio Olot or Diari de Terrassa, are high-traffic sites.

One of the myths circulating around WordPress is that it's rigid and can't be customized. Our experience is that from a little investment, anything can be possible. We can build any kind of website, from a personal blog to an e-commerce, corporate site, forum, etc. The list is quite lengthy:

  • Blogs
  • Business websites
  • Portfolios
  • Newspapers
  • Forums
  • ECommerce sites
  • Rating websites
  • Membership sites
  • eLearning modules
  • Chatrooms
  • Galleries
  • Personal websites for self-promotion
  • Job boards
  • Business directories
  • Q&A websites like Quora
  • Non-profit websites for collecting donations
  • Wikis and knowledgebases
  • Media-centric sites like YouTube
  • Auction and coupon sites

Another proof of such a committed community is the Polyglots team, an extensive group of volunteers from around the globe that is responsible for translating the Admin interface into hundreds of languages, including Pirate!
