G&C Food Distributors expanding, adding jobs in Van Buren

Van Buren, N.Y. -- The big G&C Foods distribution center on Walters Road is getting even bigger - and adding jobs.

G&C Food Distributors and Brokers Inc. has completed the first two phases of an $18 million investment in its facility at 3407 Walters Road, 10 miles west of Syracuse, and broke ground on a 70,000-square-foot expansion Aug. 25.

The company said it expects to complete the expansion, which will provide new dry storage space and a refrigerated dock, in the spring of 2018.

As part of phase one, G&C purchased the 276,000-square-foot former P&C Foods Inc. facility it was leasing from NIP Owner LLC, of Los Angeles. It paid $9.75 million for the 51-acre site.

Phase two included the installation of equipment that takes bulk supplies of frozen foods and packages them for sale to food service and retail customers. It was the company's first move into food packaging.

The first two phases resulted in the hiring of 52 new employees across all segments of the organization, the company said. Completion of the third phase will bring the total number of new, full-time jobs to 85, it said.

Combined with the center's 230 existing jobs, the expansions will bring the total workforce at G&C to 315 and enlarge the facility to nearly 350,000 square feet.

Founded in 1976, G&C distributes over 4,000 fresh, frozen and dry food items to retailers and wholesalers in 27 states.

The Onondaga County Industrial Development Agency is supporting the expansion with $1.45 million in property, sales and mortgage recording tax exemptions.
