Your Thanksgiving Day travel weather forecast: Wet Northeast, Northwest

Doyle Rice
USA TODAY
Streams of clouds skim across the peak of Oregon's Mount Hood as a darker bank of clouds heads east towards the mountain as seen from Portland, Ore., Tuesday, Nov. 22, 2016. Holiday travel in Oregon and the Pacific Northwest could be impacted by heavy rain in the valleys and potentially heavy snow in the higher elevations over the next few days.

Travelers hitting the roads Thursday should see smooth sailing to Thanksgiving feasts throughout much of the nation, but folks in the Northeast and Northwest will face some challenging weather conditions.

In the Northeast, the greatest threat for snow and ice will be from northern Pennsylvania to western and central New England, AccuWeather said. Cities such as Albany and Syracuse should see a mix of snow and rain, while Burlington, Vt., could see about an inch of snow.

In southern New England, drivers in Boston, Providence and Hartford could all have a few morning travel troubles with freezing drizzle in the forecast, the National Weather Service said. A few showers are likely in New York City for the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade.

In the Northwest, a potent storm will slam into the region on Thanksgiving. Heavy rains and gusty winds will make for a dreary, dismal day in Seattle and Portland.

A few inches to a foot of snow will fall over the Cascade Mountains in Washington, AccuWeather said. Snow will impact travel along Interstates 5, 84, and 90 across the Pacific Northwest, WeatherBug warned.

Elsewhere, other than some nuisance snow showers in the northern Plains, travel on Thanksgiving Day will be smooth for much of the country, AccuWeather meteorologist Ryan Adamson said.

Looking ahead to Black Friday, some areas of light rain or snow showers will linger in the Great Lakes, Northeast and mid-Atlantic, according to the Weather Channel.

A few showers may also dampen Texas and more rain and mountain snow will persist from the Pacific Northwest to central California on the biggest shopping day of the year.
