Democrat Edward Kennedy and Republican John MacDonald are running to represent the 1st Middlesex District in the Massachusetts Senate.

Kennedy is a Lowell city councilor who beat out four other candidates in the Democratic primary, receiving just under 25 percent of the vote. MacDonald is a commercial real estate appraiser who had an unsuccessful bid for city council in Lowell.

The seat is open after Democrat Eileen Donoghue became Lowell city manager this year.

The 1st Middlesex District consists of the city of Lowell and the towns of Dunstable, Groton, Pepperell, Tyngsborough and Westford in Middlesex County.
