Duluth Denfeld will end a 65-year drought when it makes an appearance in the Minnesota high school state baseball tournament this week.
However, the Hunters will need to pull off a big upset to keep the mojo going after Saturday's random draw.
Unseeded Denfeld (16-9) will face No. 1 Monticello (18-5) in a Class AAA quarterfinal at 10 a.m. Thursday at Siebert Field in Minneapolis.
The winner advances to play either Marshall - the one in the southwestern corner of the state - and Benilde-St. Margaret's at noon Friday.
The other Marshall - Duluth's private school - opens up Class AA play with a quarterfinal against Glencoe-Silver Lake (19-5) at 10 a.m. Thursday at Dick Putz Field in St. Cloud. The Hilltoppers (23-1), last season's runners-up, are seeded No. 1. Paynesville Area and Perham are a possible semifinal opponent Friday.
Section 7A winner South Ridge (20-6) will find out its Class A quarterfinal opponent Sunday after the draw is held.
