PHOENIX, March 18 (UPI) -- Arizona quarterback Kurt Warner had surgery on his left hip this week but is expected to rejoin the team for the bulk of preseason workouts, the Cardinals said.

Warner had the arthroscopic procedure done Tuesday by Dr. Marc Philippon in Vail, Colo. Philippon also performed hip surgery on New York Yankees slugger Alex Rodriguez.

An item on the Cardinals' team Web site said Philippon called the operation a success.

Warner said he suffered a tear of the labrum in his left hip last season and played most of the year with the injury. He said he opted for surgery "for short-term success on the field as well as long-term comfort off the field."

"Everything went well and I am feeling great," the quarterback said.

Warner will miss Arizona's May 1-3 minicamp but is expected to be in the field for voluntary workouts in the middle of the month, the posting on the team Web site said.

Warner recently agreed to a two-year, $23 million contract with Arizona. An 11-year NFL veteran, Warner passed for 4,583 yards and 30 touchdowns last season in helping the Cardinals advance to the Super Bowl. He has passed for 28,591 yards and 182 touchdowns in his career.
