Former Florida head coach and Alabama offensive coordinator Jim McElwain has joined Jim Harbaugh's Michigan staff as wide receivers coach, the school announced Tuesday.

"I am excited to work with this offensive staff and coach Harbaugh," McElwain said. "There are a lot of great offensive minds in that coaching room and I look forward to learning from them."

McElwain told ESPN's Chris Low for a story published over the weekend that he would also be involved in game-planning with the Wolverines. He will complete Michigan's staff as the 10th assistant coach, a vacancy created when former Arkansas offensive coordinator Dan Enos left after a month to take a job at Alabama.

McElwain parted ways with Florida on Oct. 29, with the Gators in the midst of a 4-7 season. He went 22-12 overall in Gainesville, including SEC East championships in each of his first two seasons.

The 55-year-old McElwain was Alabama's offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach from 2008-2011, helping the Crimson Tide to a pair of national championships before taking the head-coaching job at Colorado State. He went 22-16 in three seasons with the Rams before leaving for Florida.

McElwain was also offensive coordinator at Fresno State in 2007. Prior to that, he worked on staffs at Michigan State, Louisville, Montana State, Eastern Washington and with the NFL's Oakland Raiders.
