Summerson, Apollon win to complete suspended match

GRANTHAM, Pa. – Sophomores Devinity Apollon (Washington D.C./School Without Walls) and Hannah Summerson (South Williamsport, Pa./South Williamsport) picked up where they left off and posted singles wins to wrap up a suspended match on Wednesday, April 18, for the Lycoming College women's tennis team, which fell to Messiah College, 6-3, in MAC Commonwealth action at Criste Courts.

Both matches were picked up after snow halted the match on Tuesday evening. Apollon, facing match point in a superset tiebreaker, came back to post a 2-6, 6-3, 13-11 win over Kelly Hopkins at No. 1 singles. Summerson held on for a 7-6 (4), 6-3 win over Kaitlyn Russell at No. 2.

The win was Summerson's 13th singles win of the season, moving within a victory of tying her own single-season record of 14. Summerson's 14 wins set during 2016-17 (14-6) are tied with Cricket Temple, who went 14-0 in 1999 and 14-1 in 2001.

On Tuesday, senior Kaitlin Hallabuk (Towanda, Pa./Towanda Area) posted a 7-5, 6-3 win at No. 3, but Messiah won the bottom three flights to clinch the match after sweeping a tightly-contested set of doubles bouts. The No. 1 doubles team of Apollon and Summerson fell, 9-7, and the No. 2 team of Hallabuk and junior Brittany Lenze (St. Mary's, Pa./Elk County Catholic) fell, 8-6.

The Warriors fell to 8-7 overall and 2-3 in the MAC Commonwealth and defending MAC Commonwealth champion Messiah improved to 7-5 overall and 5-0 in the MAC Commonwealth.

The Warriors host Alvernia University on Saturday, April 21, in a 1 p.m. MAC Commonwealth match at Bruce Henry Park.
