Deuce on Saints season and his new radio career

NEW ORLEANS, LA (WVUE) - Former Saints running back Deuce McAllister stopped by FOX 8 to talk about his thoughts on the upcoming Saints season and what he hopes to offer fans from his new post in the radio broadcast booth.

McAllister said even though he's not playing on Sunday when the Saints begin the 2016 regular season against the Oakland Raiders at home in the Mercedes-Benz Superdome, he said he's excited and nervous at the same time.

The beloved former Saint will team up with the legendary voice of the Saints and FOX 8 Saints analyst Jim Henderson to call Saints games for WWL-AM radio. It's a new role for the fan favorite, who hopes his experience on the field will resonate on air.

"I played with a lot of guys who are still playing, so I think that helps. For me, I don't want to give too much football talk. I want the average fan to be able to understand, to 'see' what I'm seeing and being able to tell them," McAllister said.

He replaced longtime color analyst Hokie Gajan who recently lost his battle with cancer. McAllister filled in for Gajan last season as Gajan's health began to decline.

As for the upcoming Saints season, McAllister said the current team has room to grow. "Right now, what I see is up down, up down, up down. And that's just having a young team. When the light finally does go off, you have a dangerous squad and hopefully they have enough wins that we get to game 9, game 10. That they're still in that race," McAllister said.

McAllister had lots of praise for quarterback Drew Brees. "His focus has been to win. Now, you want to expand on the record of 7-9 which they've had the last couple years. So now it's just going out and winning games."
