A Consultant Urologist at the University of Medical Sciences Teaching Hospital, Ondo, Ondo State, Dr Ogundiniyi Olurotimi, has advised men above 40 to undergo regular prostate cancer screening.
The head of the school’s department of surgery spoke during a prostate cancer awareness talk show and free prostate specific antigen screening organised by the Alimosho/Agege chapter of the National Association of Seadogs in Lagos State.
No fewer than 100 men above 40 were screened during the event to mark this year’s World Health Day.
According to Olurotimi, prostate cancer is one of the leading causes of death in men above 40.
He said, “Prostate cancer is one of the leading causes of cancer-related deaths worldwide in men only second to lung cancer. Here in Nigeria it is the number one cause of cancer-related death in men. For instance, the University of Lagos Teaching Hospital presents a ratio of 127 per 100,000 men.
“Not many people in this country have access to health care and experienced health care practitioners. It is important for men to carry our regular checks for early detection. This talk show is part of my contribution in giving back to society.”
The Regional Vice-President of NAS in Lagos State and South Africa, Mr Uchenna Nnoli, said the programme was one of the cardinal programmes of the organisation.
According to him, millions of people globally, especially in developing nations, still do not have access to basic health care.
The President of Hawkins Deck, Mr Chuks Onwudinjo, said the objective of the programme was in tandem with this year’s World Health Day theme of universal health coverage for all.
He said the PSA screening was carried out in Alimosho/Agege area as one of the largest residential settlements in Lagos, adding that the screening would continue on a quarterly basis.
