Ione Jacobson

Ione Jacobson, age 90, of Gary, MN, died Friday, January 18, 2019, at Viking Manor Nursing Home, Ulen, MN.

Ione Elaine Kvamme was born April 30, 1928, in Gary, MN, the youngest child born to Adolph and Bessie (Noss) Kvamme. Her early years were spent in Gary, but as a teenager Adolph's employment took the family to Oregon. Ione graduated from high school in Portland and shortly thereafter the family returned to Minnesota. Ione was united in marriage to T. Sanford "Sandy" Jacobson on March 17, 1951. Sandy was deployed to serve overseas during the Korean Conflict. He proudly served in the United States Army until his honorable discharge in 1953. The couple made their home in Moorhead, MN, and were blessed with four children: Becky, Karen, Michael, and Dennis. In 1967, the family returned to Gary to make their home. In addition to caring for their children, Ione also worked periodically over the years at the Hartz Grocery Store, Sock-o Plant and Forsell's Station.

They remained in their home until Ione's deteriorating health required more care and she moved to the Twin Valley Living Center in 2014. After nearly 70 years of marriage, Ione and Sandy were nearly inseparable and he was always there for her, visiting daily. Sandy was diagnosed with cancer and entered the nursing home to be near his bride where he passed away, with family by his side, on Saturday, August 11, 2018. Ione had only recently transferred to Viking Manor Nursing Home in Ulen.

Ione will be remembered as a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother and friend. She was a gracious host always making sure there were goodies for family and company alike. She was a great cook and a wonderful baker. Not one to sit idle, Ione was always busy doing or helping. She loved watching the birds, fishing and spending time at the lake. She also enjoyed baking, bowling, playing Bingo and cards (especially "90") and watching or listening to Twins baseball. Above all else, family and faith were first in Ione's life. She never lost her care, compassion or maternal instincts, always looking after her children. She loved time with her family and truly cherished each of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Ione will live on in the hearts of all who knew her.

Ione is survived by two daughters, Becky (Greg) Syverson of Tulaby Lake, MN, and Karen (Steve) Olson of Twin Valley, MN; two sons, Michael of Moorhead, MN, and Dennis of Gary; seven grandchildren: Trish (Ole) Rygg, Shaun (Cheri) Syverson, Judd Syverson, Nick (Sarah) Olson, Nate (Ashley Rae) Olson, Erika (Dana) Klemetson, and Ashley (Karl) Tollefson; 19 great grandchildren: Silje, Ingrid, Maren, and Anja Rygg, Mason and Kacie Syverson, Peyton, Averi, and Piper Syverson, Morgan, Drasyn, and Aspyn Olson, Carter, Keaton, and Kade Olson, Kendyl and Drew Klemetson, Kora Tollefson and one more on the way; three sisters-in-law: Vonnie Jacobson of Dilworth, MN, Darlene Kvamme of Fargo, ND, and Evelyn Kvamme of Moorhead, MN; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Sandy; five siblings: Alice, Bert, Richard, Beatrice and Bud.

In lieu of flowers, family prefers memorials be given to the Gary Lutheran Church (Linen cloths fund) in her memory.

The family extends their thanks to the loving and caring staff at both the Twin Valley Living Ctr. And the Viking Manor in Ulen for their excellent care. They treated her with dignity and respect as if she were their own mother or grandmother. They made us feel like we were all part of one BIG happy family.

Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 am tomorrow, January 22, 2019, at Gary Lutheran Church in Gary. Visitation will take place one hour prior to the funeral. Interment will be at Gary Lutheran Cemetery.
