Gorbea Gets Nod for RI Democratic Secretary of State

The former deputy secretary of state was victorious over businessman Guillaume De Ramel

Nellie Gorbea (gor-BAY'-uh) has won the Democratic nomination for Rhode Island secretary of state.

The former deputy secretary of state defeated businessman Guillaume De Ramel (gee-OHM' day-rah-MELL') in Tuesday's primary.

The 47-year-old Gorbea ran the office's day-to-day operations from 2002 to 2006. She has also worked with several nonprofit groups in the state, including HousingWorks RI and the Women's Fund.

Gorbea says she wants to make elections fair and accurate, make it easy for businesses to navigate government and ensure transparency. She says her top priority if elected would be to make information collected in the office easy to get and use.

She faces Republican John Carlevale, host of a public access TV show, in the Nov. 4 general election. Carlevale has run unsuccessfully for political office several times.
