If losing a few kilos is your goal, don’t let the demands of your career path take you off the road

With some foresight, getting from A to B on a workday, doesn’t have to send your weight-loss plan off track. Plan ahead with these simple suggestions:

Commuting
Getting ready for the day, and getting where you need to be on time, often means breakfast is neglected. This can leave you prone to filling a hole with an unhealthy snack later.

If you know you’re going to be on the move through the day, savoury snacks, baked and lowfat, will do the trick. Pack some healthy treats in your bag for when you fancy something sweet.

Driving to work
When you’re stuck behind the wheel, making healthy food choices can be tricky. The trick is to plan ahead — take some trusted travel companions with you, such as milk and bran flakes for your breakfast, and a stash of fruit and a bottle of water to keep you from a temptation buy. With a little extra planning, you can carry your own healthy snacks. Carrot sticks or apples, are always handy, convenient and messfree.

At the airport
Fuelling up before you take off makes sense when you’re flying short haul. If you choose to eat in a pub or restaurant, making smart choices will ensure you stay on course. Before a morning flight, go for a bowl of fresh fruit; for lunch, grab a jacket potato with baked beans; and in the evening, tuck into a grilled meal option and ask for it to come with a salad instead of chips.

In the air
Once you do get off the ground, it still pays to be discerning with your in-flight dinner and drinks. If you’re a frequent flyer or travelling on a longhaul package deal that includes an in-flight meal, find out if you can request a healthier option at the time of booking. Most airlines provide options to suit dietary preferences
