Dan Harmon has revealed what is causing the delay in renewing Rick and Morty for a fourth season.

The creator and showrunner recently appeared on Kevin Smith and Scott Mosier's SModcast, where he explained that contract negotiations between him, Justin Roiland and Adult Swim's parent company Turner are responsible for the series not having been renewed yet.

Sigh.

"The reason we're not working on Rick and Morty right now ain't because I figured out that I don't need to impress you," Harmon said.

"It's because of a little something called contract negotiations and it's gotten complicated this time around."

Harmon neglected to expand on those details, leaving us at a loss as to what the issue with the contract actually is.

However, co-creator and voice actor Justin Roiland is directing the blame at Turner.

Taking to Twitter last week, the writer answered fan calls for word on if and when series four will start filming, after previous speculation that the show's return is more than two years away.

"For everyone telling me to get back to work on Rick and Morty (season four) turn your attention to Turner," Roiland said.

"I'm waiting around just like you. Making some cool video games in the meantime though!"

Damn it.

Rick and Morty seasons 1-3 are available to watch on Netflix. The show airs on Adult Swim in the US.
