Police release name of suspect, victim in killing at Downtown fitness center

IMPD released the booking photo of Cody Weir, 25, of Avon. Weir is a suspect in the killing of 23-year-old Carina Rodriguez in a Downtown apartment building's fitness center.

Indianapolis Metropolitan Police have released the names of both the woman found dead in the fitness center of a luxury Downtown apartment building Friday morning and the man charged with killing her.

Carina Rodriguez, 23, was exercising in the second-floor gym of the 9 on Canal Apartments, 335 W. 9th St., early Friday morning when she was attacked, police said.

Police released surveillance footage Friday afternoon of a man considered to be a person of interest in the case. By the end of Friday, police had arrested Cody Weir, 25, Avon, in connection with Rodriguez's death. Weir is facing a preliminary charge of murder.

While police said that they did not believe Rodriguez had been shot, they added that they would not know the nature of her injuries until after an autopsy is completed.

Weir was arrested in 2013 in Hendricks County on charges of holding a woman at gunpoint and raping her. The following year a jury found him not guilty on all charges and shortly thereafter returned a black 9 mm Beretta semiautomatic gun to him.

The death marked the 113th criminal homicide in Indianapolis this year. The city saw a record 149 criminal homicides in 2016.

Homicide detectives also are investigating the death of a 15-year-old who was found shot early Saturday morning.
