A convicted felon was arrested after she attempted to purchase a firearm in April at Wisconsin Firearms Training Center, 12730 W. Burleigh Road in Brookfield.

Tangie Coward, 27, of Milwaukee was charged in Waukesha County Circuit Court with possession of a firearm by a felon and if convicted, she could face 10 years in prison.

Coward was convicted in 2013 for substantial battery in Milwaukee County, according to Wisconsin court records. The court records said that as a convicted felon, "Defendant shall never be in possession of any firearms or weapons."

The city of Brookfield police received information on April 19 from the Wisconsin Firearm Training Center that a convicted felon had attempted to purchase a firearm at that location, according to the criminal complaint.

The manager at the center provided documents and surveillance confirming Coward completed the concealed-carry weapons course at the Training Center on April 18.

The manager said after the course, Coward went to the firing range and fired a handgun, which was also captured on surveillance video. Coward attempted to fill out paperwork to purchase a Smith and Wesson 9mm pistol, the complaint said.

Officers spoke to Coward on April 24 and in the complaint, admitted to taking the concealed-carry course and firing a handgun on the range.

The complaint said Coward was adamant she was never charged with a felony and only had misdemeanor convictions.

Coward's next court date is July 12.
