Fruit Club: Strawberries expected to sell out
It’s a sure sign of spring – Fruit Club strawberries are almost here!
The Fruit Club, a Sioux Falls-based distributor of fresh fruit nationwide, is accepting reservations for its popular strawberries.
The Fruit Club’s Brandee Miller recently visited the strawberry grower in Florida who supplies the fruit.
"When we arrived we could smell the strawberries as we got out of the car, it was so exciting. That’s how it is when we get to the locations and open the doors to the trailer. Our customers eyes light up and there’s always excitement," she said.
“The grower has been doing this his whole life. It’s clearly a passion for him."
Every berry on the 600-acre operation is hand-picked for The Fruit Club.
“Every single year when they start their season all the plants are hand-planted. So they are brand new plants every year,” Miller said. “It keeps the integrity of the plant and the product, because they’re starting from scratch every single year. That’s why our strawberries are so good!"
The Fruit Club typically sells out of strawberries quickly, and it’s not hard to see why. Some were the size of Miller’s palm! Her kids couldn’t resist, either.
“As I was talking to the grower, I found out my kids were sneaking berries off the plants,” she said. "They’ve been asking for them ever since we left."
Fruit Club customers who want to snag this year’s crop of strawberries need to act fast. The berries will be delivered starting in February through March, but reservations are needed. No membership is required to be part of the Fruit Club. Anyone can order fruit and see a delivery schedule through thefruitclub.net.
“We love to see our customers lined up at our fruit truck, but don’t assume you can just show up and buy these strawberries. We need you to plan ahead so we are able to have enough product on hand,” Miller said. “And we sell out every year!”
The Fruit Club will be delivering strawberries on Feb 18th in southern states and cities, including in new markets in Kentucky, and will deliver until roughly March 11 in 300 communities in 14 states. The deadline to reserve is Feb. 15.
A flat, weighing eight to nine pounds, is $25.
