Cher and Cher alike.
That’s the name of the game on Friday at Telsey + Company casting, where 300 actresses will try out for a starring role in the new Broadway-bound biomusical “The Cher Show.”
But snap out of it if you expect to see Cher lookalikes flipping their hair and licking their lips lined up outside the company’s office in the Theater District. Each actress has an assigned tryout time. Every available slot has been filled. Another 250 women auditioned by tape.
Moreover, the casting announcement specifically states that a Cher copycat isn’t what’s wanted for the role of “Babe,” who represents Cher at the early stage of her life. They want a fierce individual “with a fantastic high belt.”
Two more chapters of Cher’s life will also play out in the show written by “Jersey Boys” Tony nominee Rick Elice. The show is threaded together with Cher hits like “I Got You Babe,” “Gypsies, Tramps and Thieves,” “Take Me Home,” “Believe,” and “If I Could Turn Back Time.”
A developmental lab workshop of the musical is set for October.
