Nintendo NX update: Experts talk Nintendo advantage following handheld report

THE Nintendo NX will be launched next year and retail experts have been giving their opinion on the potential impact a return to cartridges would have, following a recent handheld update.

The Nintendo NX's impact will depend on its media format NINTENDO

The Nintendo NX's impact will depend partly on its media format

There are several different reports circulating regarding the Nintendo Nx’s media format.

Some have taken note of comments and earning report information tied to companies who have worked with Nintendo in the past to come to the conclusion that cartridges will be used.

Others have looked at the company removing a disc drive completely and relying solely on digital media.

Gamestop, the large US-based Games retailer have spoken on the subject, appearing confident that Nintendo will be releasing physical content.

GameStop’s Paul Raines commented during a recent earnings call: “I would say that the fact that there are rumors of that type just confirms for you that this is an important console for next year,” he said. “It will have physical media, we will play a role in it, our pre-owned business will also play a role. So we’re excited about that.”

While the company’s president, Mike Mauler, also spoke about the impact catridge would have over the traditional disc format: “The only difference would be on the refurbishment and pre-owned side.

“And actually, cartridges are much simpler to refurbish and repackage. So there is somewhat a little bit of an advantage if it went in that direction on used.”

A Japanese financial report released earlier in May appeared to have revealed a new Nintendo handheld console in development, codenamed the MH.

The information was reportedly part of an investor note from Morgan Stanley that was sent to outlets in Japan.

However, since the news was first released, other industry experts have been quick to point out some facts about the new information and why it doesn't point to either a standalone device, or tie-in NX controller.

According to Dr. Serkan Toto, an analyst who has a good track-record of sourcing Nintendo announcements before their official release, the Morgan Stanley report is merely making a prediction.

“That Morgan Stanley Japan note on Nintendo does NOT mean a portable console or the name "MH" is confirmed. They are picturing a scenario,” Serkan explained on Twitter.

“Such "rich" forward-looking analysis and also the wording is standard in investor notes. I know because I read *tons* of them.

“I just received and read it. As I said, they were picturing a scenario. Financial institutions do this kind of future-oriented analysis all the time. The note is much longer than what was released online.

“The analyst clearly says they are just projecting. They use "MH" as a codename to make the report more readable. It's arbitrary.

It would have answered several question raised on how Nintendo planned to replace the 3DS handheld console and whether it we would have seen the launch of a tie-in controller, featuring standalone game access.
