Brookwood Baptist Medical Center to remain Medicare, Medicaid provider

Brookwood Baptist Medical Center will remain an approved Medicare and Medicaid provider after a psychiatric patient died after being restrained in April, according to a hospital spokesperson.

"We have received notification from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services' (CMS) that as a result of the follow-up survey completed on May 31, 2018, CMS has rescinded the notice of termination and Brookwood Baptist Medical Center remains an approved Medicare and Medicaid provider," said Communications manager Laura Clarke.

"All of us at Brookwood Baptist Medical Center take patient safety very seriously, and we are committed to continuous improvement in quality measures and safety procedures and to maintaining the confidence of our community."

A CMS spokesperson told AL.com the patient died on April 19 after he was restrained at the hospital.

CMS officials said the hospital failed to follow proper procedures for physically restraining a patient, failed to complete a face to face patient assessment within one hour after the patient was restrained, failed to obtain physician orders and failed to ensure the restraint order was signed by the physician within 24 hours.

CMS said the patient suffered cardiac arrest and died due to the hospital's failures. In addition, these failures posed a risk to the health and safety of all patients in the facility in physical restraints.

The hospital was notified that its Medicare agreement will terminate on May 31 if the noncompliance noted during the survey are not corrected, CMS said.

The hospital submitted a plan of correction, which CMS did not release.
