The Yukon Rivermen hockey organization is expecting 40-skaters for this weekend’s identification camp.

Rivermen co-ordinator Carl Burgess said this morning 35 skaters have registered so far.

The camp begins Friday morning at 9 a.m. and will run through the weekend, and interested players can sign up throughout the day on Friday, he said.

Registration is $200, and must be made online through BCHockey.

Burgess explained the Rivermen organization is expanding its program this coming season to include an under-16 minor midget team, along with the U-15 bantam team they ran with success this past season.

The Rivermen represented the North in the inaugural season of BC Hockey’s
bantam Tier 1 zone league, under the direction of head coach Martin Lawrie.

BCHockey is currently looking at forming a new U-16 midget zone league and the Rivermen are negotiating a spot in the league.

Burgess said the purpose of this weekend’s ID camp is not only to give the organization an opportunity to have a look. It’s also an opportunity for players to get on the ice, get to know each other and get a feel for the level of hockey they’ll be expected to play, he explained.

Burgess said at this level of hockey, it’s important to begin building the teams now for the next season.

“So we will have a good look at the next wave of players that are interested.”

Friday will be dedicated to practices and fitness training, while the bantam and midget squads will play two games each on Saturday and another two on Sunday.

The Rivermen coordinator said the organization will follow up with letters of commitment to the players in the weeks following the camp, and will be hosting another camp in August.
