Women's Soccer Drops One-Goal Home Match To GLVC Leader McKendree

Rolla, Mo. – Those in attendance for this Friday's (Oct. 12) Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC) match between McKendree and the Missouri S&T women's soccer team would be quick to say the Bearcats earned their 1-0 victory as the Miners proven to be more than a worthy opponent in a highly-competitive contest played in wet weather conditions at S&T's Allgood-Bailey Stadium.

Neither team was able to get on the scoreboard in the opening 45 minutes of action despite some solid scoring chances.  A Bearcat shot in the 10th minute hit the S&T goal crossbar before the Miners countered with consecutive shots on the McKendree goal as senior midfielder Morgan Sikora's (Highland, Ill./Highland) header was saved at the 11:58 mark as was a shot from junior midfielder Jess Haller at 13:37.

The match remained remained scoreless in the second half until McKendree capitalized on corner kick opportunity at 70:16 as Jane Skaggs' header went into the Miners' goal in what signified the only score.  Emma Knoebel picked up the assist on Skaggs' game-winning tally.  The Miners, who matched the Bearcats in total shots with 14 apiece for the match, almost netted the equalizer in the 83rd minute but sophomore defender Cameryn Boucher (Chandler, Ariz./Basha)'s shot hit the crossbar.  S&T would get one more opportunity minutes later, but a shot by senior defender Carli Tastad (Millstadt, Ill./Belleville West) was wide right of the Bearcats' goal.

For S&T, sophomore goalkeeper Kristin Steins (Ballwin, Mo./Parkway South) recorded five saves in 90 minutes between the posts as did McKendree goalkeeper Zoe Brochu.

The Miners, who had six shots in the first half followed by eight in the second, received a match-leading four shots from Morgan Sikora (Highland, Ill./Highland).  Carli Tastad (Millstadt, Ill./Belleville West) registered three shots while Jess Haller (Eureka, Mo./Eureka) and senior midfielder Taylor Vollmer (Belleville, Ill./Belleville West) both had two shots each.  Both of Vollmer's shots were on the McKendree goal.

MIssouri S&T dropped to 3-8-1 overall and 2-6-1 in the GLVC while McKendree improved to 11-1-1 overall with a 7-1-1 conference mark.

The Miners will close out the home portion of their regular-season schedule this Sunday (Oct. 14) versus the Illinois Springfield Prairie Stars at Allgood-Bailey Stadium in Rolla.  Match time is set for 12 p.m. (CT) and S&T will recognize its seven-member 2018 women's soccer senior class in a special pre-match ceremony.  Comprising the class are goalkeeper Liz Carrano (Gurnee, Ill./Warren Township), midfielder Lauren Tolan (Columbia, Ill./Columbia), defender Andrea Aller (Bettendorf, Iowa/Pleasant Valley), midfielder Mikaela Mockenhaupt (Oswego, Ill./Oswego)Morgan Sikora (Highland, Ill./Highland), Carli Tastad (Millstadt, Ill./Belleville West), and Taylor Vollmer (Belleville, Ill./Belleville West)
