Detroit Collegiate Prep-Northwestern extended its winning streak to eight with a 53-24 victory Wednesday over visiting Detroit Southeastern in the first round of the Detroit Public School League girls basketball playoffs.

After giving up 15 points in the first half, DCP-Northwestern clamped down defensively and held Southeastern (0-10 PSL) to nine second-half points.

Senior guard Icesis Chandler-Poole anchored the defense with six of the team's 25 steals, while Ericka Smith and Berika Gatson each scored five.

Chandler-Poole had 22 points and 12 rebounds to lead DCP-Northwestern (10-3, 10-0). Twin sister Iresis Chandler-Poole, a senior forward, added eight points and 11 rebounds.

"(Icesis and Iresis) are averaging a double-double. They've been having an excellent season and have come on strong as of late," DCP-Northwestern coach Orlando Watkins said. "The thing I'm most proud of is this team is well-rounded and our scoring is even. Up to this point, freshman guard Ericka Smith has been leading us in scoring."

DCP-Northwestern will face Detroit Renaissance in the quarterfinal round at 5 p.m. Feb. 5 at Detroit Western.

"We can't seem to get over the hump and make it past the quarterfinals," Watkins said. "We won our (PSL) division two years in row and last year we made it to the regional championship. We've made some good runs and made improvements. This year we're focused on taking that next step."
