Showtime‘s “Nurse Jackie” has tapped Emmy winner Tony Shalhoub for a recurring role in season seven, the cabler announced Wednesday. Shalhoub will play Dr. Bernard Prince, a new ER doctor who has a great bedside manner, a special touch with his boss, Gloria Akalitus (Anna Deavere Smith), and who offers Jackie something she desperately needs — a friend.

The series stars Edie Falco, Merritt Wever, Dominic Fumusa, Paul Schulze, Betty Gilpin, Ruby Jerins, Stephen Wallem, Mackenzie Aladjem and Peter Facinelli. Clyde Phillips is showrunner and executive producer. Tom Straw, Richie Jackson, Liz Flahive and Caryn Mandabach also serve as executive producers. “Nurse Jackie” is a co-production between Showtime and Lionsgate.

Shalhoub is best known as the titular character in USA’s “Monk,” a role that earned him three Emmys. He was most recently seen on the big screen in the Michael Bay-produced “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles” reboot.
