Monday night during the Top 8 performance episode of “The Voice,” ballad singer MaKenzie Thomas of Team Jennifer Hudson took on “Vision of Love” for America’s votes. As for MaKenzie performing yet another Mariah Carey classic, JHud noted that it was smart so that they could “keep this diva train going” into the finals. “Please guy, first of all vote for MaKenzie because MaKenzie just deserves to be here,” Jennifer raved when it was her turn to speak. “Everything you just did was amazing. You are like a coach’s dream. And then a student’s dream, because I’m sitting here learning from you as you go. To know that you listen and you add your expertise and specialty to it, it’s crazy. Like, it’s bananas in a way you kept singing after the song was over. You turned around and looked at the musician and I said, ‘Is still going, Kelly?!’ For the most part, I gotta give you all the credit. She’s amazing on her own, coach or no coach.”
In his “The Voice” live blog, our recapper Denton Davidson had this to say about the performance: “While Jennifer wants to keep MaKenzie’s diva train going, I’m sick of MaKenzie rehashing the great diva songbook. I wish she would have chosen something more unexpected. Regardless, MaKenzie always impresses me and I love how she kicked off this song with just a simple piano backing her. The fact that Kelly has “stank face” while watching is proof MaKenzie is laying out the vocals. There aren’t many vocalists who could do what MaKenzie has just done so I applaud her for that. The runs, the high notes, she nailed it all. All four coaches were on their feet by the end.”
