Area Sports Notes: Dalton State falls 68-64 in overtime in NAIA basketball tournament

Dalton State lost 68-64 in overtime to its quadrant's No. 1 seed, William Penn of Iowa, in the NAIA Division I men's basketball tournament Friday night in Kansas City, Mo. Mon'Darius Black scored 17 points and Aaron Burress, Reed Dungan and Carnilious Simmons added 12, 11 and 10, Simmons with seven rebounds, for No. 4 seed DSC (25-9). William Penn is 29-4.

Fishing

-Jacob Wheeler of Harrison was in seventh place after Friday's first round in the 2018 Bassmaster Classic on Lake Hartwell in South Carolina, and Bryan College national champion Jacob Foutz from Charleston, Tenn., was 38th at 11 pounds, 15 ounces. Foutz won the 2017 Carhartt College Classic Bracket. Wheeler, who was third in the Bassmaster Elite Series standings last year, weighed 16-1 Friday. Oklahoma residents Jason Christie and Edwin Evers led with 20-14 and 19-9.

Softball

-The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga softball team got good pitching Friday from Celie Hudson and Allison Swinford in a five-inning 10-1 win over Quinnipiac and a 2-1 loss to Florida Gulf Coast in Clearwater, Fla. Swinford threw a four-hitter against FCGU (21-4), when J.J. Hamill was 3-for-4 with a double and Devan Brown was 2-for-3 with the RBI for UTC (13-15). Brook Womack was 3-for-4 with a home run and four RBIs and Ashley Conner was 3-for-4 with a triple and two RBIs in the Mocs' win, while Hayleigh Weissenbach was 2-for-3 with a double and three runs scored and Emma Sturdivant was 2-for-3 with two RBIs.

-Maryville improved to 6-0 in USA South softball by winning 4-0 and 12-0 Friday at Covenant. Jade Allmon was 3-for-4 and Erika Mast 2-for-3 in the first game for Covenant (12-16, 4-6).

Baseball

-Cleveland State won 5-3 and lost 12-5 in TCCAA baseball Friday at Chattanooga State. Logan Peterson was 2-for-3 with an RBI and Rhett Baldwin was 2-for-4 in the win for the visiting Cougars (17-8, 5-3), when Noah Hill, Hunter Oliver and Tucker Mendenhall also had RBIs, Hooper Mills raised his pitching record to 5-0 with 10 strikeouts in 6 1/3 innings and Greg Tye got his fourth save of the season. Vinny Vega was 3-for-4 with an RBI and a run and Zack Teem and Nolan Machibroda each was 2-for-3 with a double for the Tigers, Teem batting in two runs. Second-place Chattanooga State (17-6, 6-2) totaled 16 hits in its win, Sean Cheely going 3-for-4 with two RBIs, Noah Fitzgerald 3-for-4 with two runs, Machibroda 2-for-2 with two walks, two runs and two RBIs, Hayden Lock 2-for-5 with a homer, two runs and two RBIs and Theron Powell 2-for-3 with an RBI. Vega tripled and scored three runs, and pitchers Jordan Power (5-1) and Fitzgerald totaled 10 strikeouts. Oliver was 3-for-4 with an RBI and a run for Cleveland State, and Mendenhall had two RBIs.

-Averett salvaged the finale of its USA South series at Covenant with a 12-5 win Friday featuring two doubles and five RBIs by Chase McKinney. For Covenant (9-13, 7-5), Trenton Nobles hit a two-run homer and Joel Johnson a three-run homer.

Golf

-The UTC women's golf team is eighth out of 12 teams after 36 holes in the Hawkeye El Tigre Invitational at Puerto Vallarta, Mexico. The Mocs shot 299-299 Friday with Holly Morgan tied for 16th at 147, Cristina Perez at 148, Monica San Juan at 149 and Megan Woods at 155. Arizona leads at 570.

Lacrosse

-The Sewanee women's lacrosse team defeated Concordia (Wis.) 13-2 on Thursday at Georgetown, Texas. Alden Woolford and Mary Kate Myers scored two goals apiece and Grace Zechman and Molly Elkins had two assists each for the Tigers (7-3), who led 10-0. Logan Bulls collected six ground balls and caused four turnovers, and Brianna Young made seven saves in 30 minutes in goal.

-Hayden Hunt and Thomas Lynde scored three goals each and Bryce Womack had 15 saves as the Sewanee men (4-3) won 12-10 at Birmingham-Southern (6-3).
