Blizzard hockey: Alexandria sweeps weekend with win over Granite City

The Alexandria Blizzard finished off a 2-0 weekend by taking care of Granite City in a 6-3 game on Saturday night.

The Lumberjacks are the top team in the West Division, but didn't have an answer for Alexandria's offense. The Blizzard scored five goals through the first two periods to lead 5-3. Josiah Roen scored the only goal of the third period to finish off the win.

Ryan Worley paced the Blizzard with two goals. Logan Nelson, Nicholas Lindgren and Tanner Frerichs all added goals, as well. Alec Skar had three assists and Brenden Payne finished with two helpers.

Brady Meyers got the win in goal after turning aside 24 shots. Alexandria outshot the Lumberjacks 38-27.

The win moved the Blizzard to 12-10 overall with 24 points. Granite City fell to 16-8 with 32 points atop the division. New Ulm (11-7-2-2) is second with 26 points, Willmar (12-10-1) is third (25 points), while Alexandria and Breezy Point (8-14-2, 18 points) round out the division standings right now.

The Blizzard will be back at the Runestone Community Center Dec. 15 when Breezy Point comes to Alexandria for a 7:10 p.m. drop of the puck.
