West Bengal to spend additional Rs 12,180 crores for infra development

West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee has said that her government will spend Rs 12,180 crores for infrastructure development in the state, in addition to the Rs 20,155 crores allocated in this year’s budget for the purpose

Stating that development could not take place without infrastructure, West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee, on September 15, 2017, announced that the state government would spend an additional Rs 12,180 crores for the construction of roads, bridges, flyovers, water projects, electrification and warehouses for storage of foodgrains, in the next two to three years.

Banerjee said that of the Rs 12,180 crores, Rs 6,195 crores had been allocated to the public works department for undertaking projects, which included, among others, four-laning of the Kalyani Expressway (42 kms) and Belgharia Expressway connectivity (4 kms), Kolkata-Basanti Road upto Ghatakpukur (25 kms) and four-laning of the Bankura-Durgapur Road.

Projects in the city include a flyover at Ganesh Chandra Avenue to New Market, flyovers/road overbridges from Taratala to Tollygunge to Anwar Shah Road to Jadavpur Phari, among others.

The food and supplies department was allocated Rs 850 crores for the construction of warehouses for foodgrain storage. The Urban Development and Municipal Affairs Department was given Rs 2,862 crores, for the construction of a giant wheel at the city’s riverside Millennium Park, a trans-municipal water supply scheme for Dankuni, Uttarpara, Konnagar, Rishra, Sreerampore and Baidyabati, Banerjee said.

Power and non-conventional energy sources were allotted Rs 2,273 crores, for renovation and modernisation of unit numbers 1, 2 and 3 of the Kolaghat Thermal Power Station, as well as renovation of Sagardighi Power Plant units 3 and 4, she said. The chief minister said that a committee has been formed under the chief secretary, for monitoring the projects.
