COVINGTON COUNTY, MS (WDAM) - Officials with Mississippi Highway Patrol have identified the man who was killed when his pickup truck collided with an 18-wheeler overnight in Covington County.

MHP said 64-year-old Edward Hager, of Prentiss, was killed in the crash.

Officials said Hager's Toyota Tundra collided with a semi-truck carrying frozen food products around 11 p.m. Monday at the intersection of Highways 84 and Highway 35 in the Lone Star community.

The 18-wheeler was headed north on Highway 35 and the truck was headed west on Highway 84 when the crash happened. Officials said Hager's truck was pinned under the 18-wheeler, and he had to be extricated from the wreckage.

"That victim was deceased upon arrival," said Collins Fire Chief John Pope. "Units with the fire department and EMS made extrication of the victim to remove him from the vehicle and care was transferred to the Covington County Coroner."

The driver of the 18-wheeler was not injured.

Part of the highway was blocked for several hours until the scene was cleared.
